Our Travel Photography aims to share a sense of a place through pictures, to invoke a curiosity in the viewer to explore.Â
The challenge to do this is bigger than ever. Today, of course, everyone has a camera to hand in their mobile phones and millions of images are taken every hour. Capturing travel images that stand out requires a lot more intention and careful planning. The blue hour shot of the Lincoln Memorial in the gallery below is a great example.
Visiting Washington DC, in the USA, a few years ago was a fantastic opportunity to photograph some of the iconic monuments we’d come to know through the movies. After exploring the area around the Lincoln Memorial earlier in the day with the crowds of tourists, we decided to return at dusk for this image. Steadying the 70-200mm telephoto lens on our lightweight, carbon-fibre travel tripod, a 30-sec exposure allowed our camera to pull the day’s final remnants of blue from the sky while smoothing out any ripples on the famous Reflecting Pool.
Certain travel pictures can also tell stories on their own and raise a smile.
Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, is nearly 1,000 years old and now a UNESCOÂ protected, World Heritage site. Covering such a huge area, it can be overwhelming trying to “see” this ancient temple and its grounds. One of our favourite pictures came from sitting quietly on the side of a courtyard while two young monks were relaxing opposite. The contrast of this historic building set against the vibrant orange robes and one of the monks checking his mobile phone, became our picture of the day.
